As we move closer to summer and with graduation behind us, students of the Class of 2025 are beginning to take their next steps towards their future beyond LJCDS. Looking back on the last four years, shaped by academic, personal, and communal growth, seniors are consequently the most qualified advisors for anyone entering Upper School. This article provides insight into some of the conversations I have had with seniors, and their best pieces of advice, reflections, and memories that they will take with them going forward.
Jack Tobal – Attending the University of British Columbia
Best Piece of Advice: Try to find a mentor, have good relationships with your teachers, and try to find a community. Figure out who to surround yourself with early on, and it’ll help you in the long run socially and academically. Always go to your mentors and teachers for guidance and support. Most importantly, don’t forget to just have fun.
Favorite Memory/Reflection: Relationship with Dr. Riel & Mr. Prychun
Bella Manuel – Attending Pepperdine University
Best Piece of Advice: Try to tackle procrastination as early as you can. If I could redo anything, it would be to start my college applications early. Procrastination applies to any project, assignment, or test, and you miss out on opportunities if it’s a repeating cycle.
Favorite Memory/Reflection: Spending time with friends in the Art Room with Ms. Corona
Brady Kirtland – Attending Babson College
Best Piece of Advice: “If I could redo anything in high school, it would be to join more clubs and be more involved in school activities.”
Favorite Memory/Reflection: Harrison Ratner yelling “Hell Nah” at an assembly announcing Upper School phone ban
Marisa Ditmar – Attending Northeastern University
Best Piece of Advice: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Go into office hours, and meet with teachers in subjects you’re not comfortable with. It makes your life a hundred times easier if you make the effort to get the help you need.
Favorite Memory/Reflection: Getting senior privileges and being able to have lunch off-campus with friends. Also, Honors Government with Kelsey, Lucia, and Bella.
These reflections on their time at Country Day serve as a reminder to incoming Upper Schoolers of the academic and social impact that connection and community can have on their Upper School experience. Through managing procrastination, friend groups, and remembering to enjoy yourself, anyone in Upper School can take a lesson from these experiences and follow in their footsteps to success. The Palette staff extends sincere gratitude and congratulations to the Class of 2025, especially our Senior Staff: Vicki, Mia, and Jessie!
