Fall sports at LJCDS have had an exciting year! We wanted to specifically highlight some successful women’s sports teams that played this fall and give you some insight into how their seasons went.
Women’s Tennis
The LJCDS women’s tennis team made history with a thrilling 10-8 victory over Scripps Ranch to claim the CIF Division 1 Championship. In a nail-biting finish, the team clinched the title by winning the final two doubles matches, breaking an 8-8 tie and securing their place as champions.
As a varsity player throughout high school and one of the captains, I have seen this team grow tremendously over the years. This season stood out not just for our success on the court but for the unity, determination, and team spirit that carried us through. Coach Mike Resinginer talks about how every player contributed and rose to the occasion. “The character and competitive spirit of our returning players, combined with the energy and talent of this year’s freshmen, were on full display in critical moments.” Together, we earned the title of the CIF champions through true team effort.
This is LJCD’s first CIF title since 2013 and the ninth in the school’s history, adding another chapter to the program’s legacy.
Women’s Field Hockey
Our LJCDS women’s field hockey team had quite a memorable year! For the first time in school history, they qualified for the open-division playoffs, making them a top-eight team in San Diego. They finished with an impressive record of 17 wins with only seven losses, playing one of the most competitive schedules in school history. The team had some pretty big wins, including a 5-0 win against Mira Mesa, an 8-0 win versus Patrick Henry and a 3-0 win against Mission Bay. The team finished the season as Eastern League champions and senior captain Elicia Bikhazi-Green was named Eastern League Player of the Year.
The team is very senior-heavy, with 12 seniors leading the program. Luckily, there is also a large freshman class who will definitely have big shoes to fill next year. Head Coach Krista Jackson does a tremendous job of facilitating team culture, and one of the key components of their successful season was the bond between the team. Coach Jackson makes sure to work with the captains to create various events throughout the seasons, fostering a connection between players on and off the field. The consistent energy from the freshman, along with the strong leadership skills of the upperclassmen, came together to form such an amazing group of girls who accomplished so much in just one season. This was an amazing year for Torrey Field Hockey, and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for the program!
Women’s Golf
The LJCDS women’s golf team had quite a successful season. With three players, Andie Javier, Ashley Ding, and Ayla Desai, competing in CIF, it can be certainly said that this year was one of the best. Although a small team, with only five players, two seniors, and three juniors, there were multiple accomplishments. Ashley Ding and Ayla Desai, both seniors who have played in all four years, were named first-team All-Coastal League. This year, Ashley made it to regional championships, and Ayla was named the Coastal Conference Fall Athlete of the Year.
Though the team is small, there’s no doubt that they will continue to do great things in the future. Hopefully, with the two seniors graduating, there will soon be underclassmen to fill those roles, and the juniors will have to step into their own roles as seniors and leaders.
