This year’s Fall play was The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised] {Again}. It was performed September 18th and 19th, and was a hilarious, innuendo-filled romp about a group of somewhat irresponsible actors tasked with performing all of Shakespeare’s 37 plays in 97 minutes, starring Kelsey Lewis, Eli Vukotich, and Kai Yandel (All of the actors played themselves). It was rife with jokes that should not be repeated, modern references, and audience interaction. From director Mr. Peveich’s point of view, he found that the play was its “own sort of slapstick, mad dash, sort of comedy” type of play. It also included “sort of callbacks and sendups to things around the community here. [There are] references to teachers and other classes and, you know, playing with people that are in the audience.” The audience was interacted with heavily. People were vomited over (#ThrowUpThursdays!), thrown out of chairs, used as a human shield, and a literal lady finger pie was thrown into the audience. “It’s just a really sort of fun and energetic show.”
Energetic it was. The characters in the play did not really know what they were doing, and were not well versed in much of Shakespeare’s works. They often broke character to ask the other actors or audience what happens next. Physical acting was emphasized in the play, as all the characters played in each play were vastly different from one another. Eli Vukotich, one of the actors, thought that “It’s [the play] super physical, which is also pretty difficult and it just takes a lot of energy.” All of Shakespeare’s comedies were crammed into one play that made almost no sense, and Troilus and Cressida was performed as an interpretive dance. But this experience was a lot of fun for the actors as well. Eli Vukotich liked the show because “It’s really nice to have a small cast…that’s something about the show that I really like..So you can really get super close to all the people and collaborate really closely within the show.” The show was a lot of work, but was it worth it? “I put a lot, like all of us put a lot of really hard work into this show and I’m really glad that it turned out the way that it did.”
