From the Bug Club to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, La Jolla Country Day has a variety of clubs to provide students with ways to explore their interests and find community.
Unlike the classes, clubs are student-run to cater to students’ interests. They are more relaxed and flexible than the traditional classes. This year, a lot of diversity caters to the student body, with affinity groups, sports clubs, hobbies, and more.
The “Asian American and Pacific Islanders(AAPI) Affinity Group”, for example, is run during lunch a few times a month. During club time, members discuss their experiences living in California and attending La Jolla Country Day as an AAPI. The club aims to create a place where AAPI students feel welcomed, heard, and comfortable. If instead, you’re more so interested in Asian culture, LJCDS has a club for that too. Meeting on Friday a couple times a month, the “Exploring Asian Culture through Cuisine“ main focus is to experience different Asian cultures by trying out different foods.
The Surf Club is to create and find a community of surfers within LJCDS. Once a month, they meet to discuss the techniques, issues, and other surfing-related topics. They even meet up over the weekends so that they can surf. Unlike official team sports, there is not a divide between the skill-levels, instead, they welcome everyone from amateurs to experienced surfers, and everyone in between.
The Baking Club is hosted every other Tuesday during lunchtime, where everyone meets to create and taste baked goods together. Outside of just these meetings, they often explore San Diego to find bakeries, cafes, and other pastry shops.
At most, these clubs only meet once a week during lunchtime. However, most meet a handful of times a month, so the time commitment doesn’t interfere with classes. Even then, attendance is not a concern, unlike flexes, which takes attendance despite not being a typical class, as clubs don’t have an official way to do it.
These clubs are a great way to connect with the school’s community and to explore someone’s own interest. A full list of these clubs can be found here, 2024-2025 Student Clubs, with detailed descriptions, as well as who to email and where to meet if interested.
