Unbeknownst to most of the La Jolla Country Day community, three classes have joined forces to tackle one of the most powerful and challenging of William Shakespeare’s plays, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. After months of memorizing the lines, building the set, and piecing together the scenes, the Play Production, Intro to Acting, and Theater Tech classes have finally all come together to breathe life into this play. Over the past week, it has taken shape: the story of a usurped throne, of a prince called to avenge his father’s murder, and of trust, love, and betrayal. The final touches have been added: the costumes, their colors bright against the stark white of the set; the music and the lights, underscoring and highlighting the story; and finally, the blood. From my assistant director’s seat in the front row, I have seen this show transform from a bare-bones rehearsal into a captivating and exciting story that sweeps the audience along with it. I have watched the actors pour their hearts into their characters and the crew bring color and life into the world of the play. As everyone prepares for the show to open, I feel confident in them and in the story that they will weave for the audience. The combined talents of the cast and crew have finally culminated in a performance unlike any other, and La Jolla Country Day will remember it for years to come. Come see Hamlet on January 24 at 6:30 pm, on January 25 at 7:00 pm, and on January 26 at 2:00 pm.
